Setup For Access Grid Toolkit 3.x

The first time you run the Access Grid software, the "Venue Client", you will have to perform some configurations to operate your video/audio devices. The following guide provides information on how to setup the Access Grid Toolkit 3.x for the first time.

Setting up the Venue Client

This section of the guide details how to setup the Venue Client.

  • The first time you run the AGTK 3.x software, the Venue Client, it will display the window below. Fill in the form and hit the Ok button (I have provided an example of the types of information that should be entered).
  • Please note that the Home Venue address listed on the image below is the standard APAG Virtual Venue 3 Server . You may wish to insert a different home lobby depending on your geographical location. A list of Global Public Venue Servers can be found at http://www.accessgrid.org/community.
  • You may want to change the profile type. Generally, if the AG node is a personal node, select the profile type "user". If the AG node is going to more a communal node that multiple people will use, select profile type "node".

Setting up the Service Manager

  • We now need to configure the Access Grid node services so that the media tools, "vic" and "rat" are started and setup up correctly. There are a number of node services that provides an Access Grid node the ability to view, listen and transmit both audio and video. Some of these include:
    • Audio Service - Provides the capability to both receive and transmit audio;
    • VideoConsumer Service - Recommended to use for viewing video streams only, doesn’t allow video transmission
    • VideoProducer Service - Recommended to use when multiple Cameras are being used, especially in a multi-node configuration. Really designed for transmitting video streams only and also mutes incoming video streams (grayed out).
    • Video Service - Recommended for Single Camera, desktop/portable AG. This service allows viewing and transmission of a single video stream.

  • This section of the guide details how to configure the node services using the Service Manager.
  • Whilst in the Venue Client, click Tools and select Configure node services....

  • Hopefully the Access Grid Node Management window has been opened. Do not close this window until the guide instructs you to.

  • Hopefully a VideoConsumerService and an AudioService has already been started.

Note: With version 3.2 to the Access Grid Toolkit, the AG software upon the first initial start up, will attempt to configure the video services. Such that it will attempt to automatically configure a video service or some video producer services. Therefore, some additional or different node services might be display than the standard AudioService and VideoConsumerServer.

Single Node Access Grid Notes

  • Within the Add Service Manager Dialog box, select the machine you wish to add as part of multi-node setup by clicking on the drop down box icon and selecting the appropriate machine.
Repeat the above 2 processes until all of the required hosts have been added. For example, you might have a host that does Video Capture and another host that does Audio. Therefore, you would have 3 Service Managers configured, one for display, one for Audio and another for Video Capture.

Configuring Services

Video Consumer Service

  • This section of the guide details how to setup and configure a Video Consumer Service.
  • Generally speaking, a video consumer service should already be added. However if this is not the case, click on the Appropriate Service Manager and click Service and then select Add. This will bring up the Add Service window. Select Video Consumer Service and hit Ok. This service will enable you to see other peoples video feeds.

Video Producer Service

This section of the guide details how to setup and configure a Video Producer Service.

  • To be able to use your own camera you need to add a Video Producer Service. Do this within the Access Grid Node Management window. Select the Appropriate Service Manager, then click on Service and then select Add.

  • Now select Video Producer and click Ok.

  • This will bring up the Select Resource window. You will have to select a different resource for each of the capture devices.

  • You may need to configure your Video Producer/s. Most cameras in Australia use the PAL standard, whereas in the United States most cameras use the NTSC standard. Check your cameras specifications to find out what standard your cameras use. To configure your Video Producer/s, select the VideoProducerService you want to change, right click on the service and select configure. The default standard is NTSC.

  • You can change the settings each video producer. If you want a particular video input to have more bandwidth, better frame rate or be of higher quality it can be changed here. The below image (top) should be similar to the default settings (if using PAL) for a standard video stream. If you wish to improve the image quality, it is recommended using settings similar to those on the below image (bottom). The use of these higher quality settings should be used if bandwidth isn't an issue and on video streams that you feel would gain benefits from producing better picture quality, such as the presenter camera.

  • You may have to complete steps 2-5 multiple times, depending on how many video producer services you would like configured.

Note that the above example shows how multiple video producers can be configured on a different computer within a multi-node Access Grid.

Audio Service

To be able to use audio in the Access Grid you will need to configure an Audio Service. This section of the guide details how to setup and configure an Audio Service.

  • If the service doesn't already exist, you need to add a Audio Service. Do this within the Access Grid Node Management window. Select the Appropriate Service Manager, then click on Service and then select Add. Then simply select Audio Service and click Ok.
  • You can configure the Audio Service by right clicking on the Audio Service. In this window you can edit whether talk is on or off by default and allows you to set the default RAT settings.

Saving Node Configuration

This section of the guide details how to save the Access Grid Node configuration.

  • Once the services all added and configured correctly, you need to save the changes you have made. Within the Access Grid Node Management window, click File and the select Store Configuration.

  • This will bring up the store configuration window. Type in a name in which to save the configuration as, select Set as default and hit the "Ok" button to save.

  • This will save the changes that has been made. Since the default option has been selected, this particular configuration will be loaded every time the Venue Client is started.
  • It is generally recommended to save multiple configurations. Simply add, remove and modify the various node services to contain Access Grid node Configurations that would be useful. Some of these examples might include:
    • Audio Only - Audio Service only;
    • Low bandwidth configuration - Single camera with low bandwidth and frame rate settings;
    • High bandwidth configuration - Many cameras with bandwidth and frame rates set very high;
    • Others - These may include extra node services such as DV/HDV, VPCScreen and other node services.
  • Note: You may wish to switch to a different configuration, this can be achieved be clicking on the menu option within the Venue Client "Tools->Configurations" and select a different saved configurations.

Final Configuration of the Venue Client

This section of the guide details the final configurations that need to be made to complete the Setting up of the Venue Client.

  • In the main "Venue Client" window click on Tools -> Preferences and then select "My Node" and make sure Enable Audio, Enable Display and Enable Video are all selected. If not, select them.
  • You can now hit the "Go" button to start using the Access Grid.
  • Hopefully you will have video feeds of everybody in the lobby.
